If you are a healthcare administrator, Dr. Vincent’s online program has been in use with adult outpatients in Winnipeg, Canada since 2006. With demonstrated effectiveness in a clinical setting, the program has been shown to significantly reduce healthcare costs. At the teaching hospital where Dr. Vincent works, this online program is the first line of intervention in a stepped care model for those with chronic insomnia. Once individuals complete the online program, only 50% go on to require more services. The inclusion of the online program has had significant impact upon the numbers of individuals interested in proceeding to direct treatment in group format. Only 24% of online participants now opt to proceed to group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for insomnia, compared to 71% proceeding historically. The number being seen for individual treatment has remained low, but constant, even with the online development, in part because of the need for individual intervention due to language or intellectual challenges. Dr. Vincent’s online program received a national award (Leading Practice) by Accreditation Canada in 2010.
